Get your front sidewalk cleared all winter for about $10/year!

If you could have your main sidewalk shoveled all through the winter season for $10 would you do it?  Did you know that for about $.09/$1000 of assessed value on your home the Town of Brighton will plow the ENTIRE STREET, on both sides!?  For most of us this works out to less than $10/year!

 Benefits:

Children walking to school could do so safely, with plowed sidewalks the entire way.  Since Indian Landing is right around the corner, many of the kids on the street end up walking to and from school, in the streets.  This happens in the early morning when the streets are busy with vehicles of residents going to work.

Rather than the patchwork of neighbors, some of whom shovel and others who can’t (or won’t) the ENTIRE STREET would have plowed sidewalks – making our sidewalks a year-round facility to be used by young and old alike.

Adult walkers could use the sidewalks, rather than the streets, whether to walk to the bus stop, or for exercise.  This would reduce the risk in the winter of a pedestrian/vehicle accident, and increase the safety of our streets.

Elderly and disabled residents would be able to have safely plowed walks giving them better mobility and access.  Those unable to shovel would at least have their sidewalk cleared, easing the burden on them.

 What has to be done:

To get a “Sidewalk plowing district” declared we’d need a petition, witnessed by a Notary Public, of at least 20% of the residents in the affected area.  If we can’t get a witnessed petition we’d need an unwitnessed petition, and a referendum that would be voted on at the next election.  I’m happy to circulate the petition but I’m not a Notary Public.  If anyone in the neighborhood is and would be willing to volunteer an afternoon or evening to go with me to do the petition I’d love the help.  Alternatively we can arrange with the town to have a “group signing” at some nearby location, and the town would provide a Notary.

The district would be declared only after a vote by the town board and public hearing on whether people wanted it or not.  Anyone for or opposed to the district could voice their opinions at the public hearing, or let their councilperson know about it.

 When:

Unfortunately we’ve missed the window for this season, but as early as next winter we could be having safely plowed sidewalks in our neighborhood all winter.
